The furry fandom

The furry movement, born in the 1980s, brings together a community of enthusiasts for anthropomorphic characters, these hybrid beings with human and animal features. The followers, called furs or furries, are estimated to number between 1.4 and 2.8 million worldwide according to a 2011 study.

Fursuits, elaborate costumes embodying these characters, are emblematic of the movement, although not all furries have them. The expression furry also extends to art, literature and role-playing games.

Often the victim of misunderstanding and stereotypes, the furry movement is in reality a warm and open community, which values creativity and self-affirmation. For those who participate, it is a space for celebrating identity and artistic expression.
